Create a Product

Create a Product

This is a guide to creating a product using WordPress & WooCommerce, taking you through the key main tasks. The process may vary depending on the nature of the product.

Before starting, prepare a suitable  set of images for the product. If the product has variations like colour then ideally there should be an image for each one.

1. Add Product

From the WP menu choose Products, Add New (as shown below) or click on the Add New button in Products.

2. Title & Description

Enter a Title for the product and add a description. If the description is simple text enter it in the editor as shown. For more complex descriptions, use the Divi Builder.

3. Product Category

Choose an appropriate category or categories. Select the parent category as well as the specific category for the product. Add new categories here if required.

4. Product Tags

Add tags to provide additional words for product searches.

Before continuing, save your product using the Save Draft button.

5. Product Image & Gallery Images

Choose a suitable image to represent the product. You can also add gallery images and, if the product has variations, such as colours, you can add these later. Try not to add the sames images as they will appear twice on the product page, i.e. once you've chosen a Product Image don't add the same image to the gallery. You can, however, add the same images to variations.

See the page on the Image Library and Media Library Folders for more details.

6. Product Data

Product data is where you add the product details, including stock management, prices, shipping and, where appropriate, variations such as size and colour.

A product may be any of the following types:

  • Simple – covers the vast majority of any products you may sell. Simple products are shipped and have no options. For example, a book. See Simple Product.
  • Variable – a product with variations, each of which may have a different SKU, price, stock option, etc. For example, a t-shirt available in different colours and/or sizes.See Variable Product.
  • Grouped – a collection of related products that can be purchased individually and only consist of simple products. For example, a set of six drinking glasses.
  • Virtual – one that doesn’t require shipping. For example, a service. Enabling this, disables all shipping related fields such as shipping dimensions. A virtual product will also not trigger the shipping calculator in cart and checkout.
  • Downloadable – activates additional fields where you can provide a downloadable file. After a successful purchase, customers are given a downloadable file as a link in the order notification email. This is suitable for example for a digital album, PDF magazine, or photo.

External or Affiliate – one that you list and describe on your website but is sold elsewhere.

7. Publish

When you are ready for the page to go live, use the Publish button.

After this you'll see an Update button instead of Publish. Whenever you make any changes to the rest of the product, use Update to apply all the changes to the product on the site.
